What to Do When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned: 3 Ways to Reset and Get Back on Track

What to Do When Life (and Your Goals) Don’t Go as Planned

It is fair to say we have all been there. You start the year with hope, prayers, and big dreams for what God has in store. You map out your goals, envision a life of growth, peace, joy, and trust that your plans will unfold as intended. But then, unexpectedly, life happens! Plans change, setbacks come, and suddenly it feels like everything is off track.

You may be saying to yourself, This was supposed to be a good year, The good news is that the year is not yet over. If you are feeling discouraged or stuck, remember that God’s timing is perfect, even when ours isn’t. Life may not be going according to your plan, but it doesn’t mean that God has stopped working on your story. While you read this blog post, take a moment to pause, seek His guidance, and realign your steps.

In this post, I’ll share five practical ways to reset when life doesn’t go as planned. I hope that this blog post will restore your mindset, refocus your goals, and help you move forward with confidence, trusting that better days are ahead.

1. Pause, Pray, and Reflect

When life throws unexpected challenges your way, the first step is to pause and reflect. Take a moment to pray and seek guidance. Ask God for clarity and strength:

  • “Lord, what can I learn from this situation?”

  • “Help me see what’s within my control and what I should release to You.”

  • “Lord, give me strength to get through this.”

There is a lesson to be learned from every challenge in our lives; these lessons often help us prepare for our next obstacles, or they may have been taught to you so you can share them with others. During the storm, it can be challenging to see what that lesson is, which is why we should always ask God. When facing difficult times, we tend to want to take control over every little thing, not realizing that some things are beyond our control.

Asking God to see what is within your control helps you focus on the next steps you can take and leave the rest to God. If you find yourself unsure of where to start, do not be afraid to release everything to God. Most importantly, remember it is okay to ask God for strength. Writing your thoughts and prayers in a journal can help you process feelings and gain perspective. Reflection paired with faith brings peace and direction.

2. Surround Yourself with Encouragement

The people and content we allow into our lives have a profound impact on our mindset and spiritual well-being. When life doesn’t go as planned, it’s easy to feel discouraged or stuck, but surrounding yourself with encouragement can help you regain clarity, hope, and motivation.

Choose Supportive Relationships

Seek out fellow believers, mentors, or friends who inspire you and reflect God’s love. These are people who:

  • Pray with you and for you.

  • Celebrate your progress, even in small victories.

  • Offer gentle guidance and wisdom without judgment.

Being around positive, faith-filled individuals reinforces hope and reminds you that you are not walking your journey alone.

Engage in Daily Spiritual Practices

Make time each day to intentionally connect with God through Scripture and devotionals. Even a few minutes can transform your mindset:

  • Read passages that speak to God’s promises, patience, and guidance.

  • Write in a journal how you see God working in your life, even through challenges.

  • Reflect on answered prayers and lessons learned.

These practices renew your spirit, remind you of your purpose, and help you stay grounded when life feels uncertain.

Consume Uplifting Content

Your mental and spiritual energy is influenced by what you consume. Choose content that builds you up:

  • Listen to uplifting podcasts that encourage growth, faith, and resilience.

  • Read your bible, inspiring blogs, books, or devotionals that motivate you to take positive action.

  • Watch videos or sermons that remind you of God’s faithfulness.

Consuming content that aligns with your values strengthens your mindset and provides practical encouragement for everyday challenges.

Limit Exposure to Negativity

Be intentional about what and who you let influence your mind. Limit exposure to:

  • Social media accounts or news that drain your energy or feed comparison.

  • Conversations or relationships that are consistently negative or discouraging.

Instead, protect your mind and spirit by focusing on what brings hope, peace, and positivity.

The Power of Positive Influence

When you surround yourself with encouragement through people, content, and spiritual practices, you create an environment that nurtures hope, resilience, and a sense of purpose. It’s not about avoiding reality, but about choosing influences that lift you and keep you moving forward in faith.

3. Celebrate Small Wins and Practice Gratitude

Gratitude transforms perspective. When life doesn’t go according to plan, it’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong, but taking time to recognize the blessings, big or small, shifts your heart toward hope and positivity. Each small step forward is an opportunity to honor God and acknowledge his work in your life.

Recognize Everyday Victories

Even tiny accomplishments are worth celebrating because they build momentum and strengthen your faith. Ask yourself:

  • Did you spend a few minutes in prayer or read your Bible today? That’s a win!

  • Did you follow through on a new habit, like journaling, exercising, or meal prepping? Celebrate it!

  • Did you notice yourself thinking fewer negative thoughts or responding with patience in a challenging moment? That’s amazing!

Acknowledging these moments reminds you that growth doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Make Gratitude a Daily Practice

Consider keeping a gratitude journal or simply taking a moment each day to reflect:

  • List three things you’re thankful for, even if they feel small.

  • Thank God for the guidance, protection, and provision you’ve received.

  • Reflect on how challenges have helped you grow or taught you valuable lessons.

Over time, this daily practice rewires your mind to notice progress rather than setbacks.

Gratitude as an Act of Worship

Every success, no matter the size, is a reminder of God’s faithfulness. Take a moment to praise Him:

  • Thank Him for giving you the strength to keep going.

  • Acknowledge the lessons He’s teaching through each step.

  • Celebrate with joy, whether quietly in prayer or with supportive friends and family.

The Ripple Effect of Gratitude

Gratitude is more than a feeling; it’s a mindset that shapes how we navigate life. By celebrating small wins and thanking God daily, we build resilience to face challenges with faith, gain confidence in our ability to make progress, and grow more aware of His presence and guidance in even the smallest moments.

Moving Forward With Faith and Purpose

When life doesn’t go as planned, it’s easy to feel frustrated or defeated but remember, setbacks don’t mean the story is over. God’s timing is perfect, and even in the unexpected, He is shaping you, teaching you, and preparing you for greater things. By pausing to pray, surrounding yourself with encouragement, and practicing daily gratitude, you can reset your mindset, refocus your goals, and keep moving forward in faith.

No matter where you find yourself today, hold on to this truth: God is still in control, and He is working all things together for your good. Keep trusting, keep growing, and keep walking in faith because your best days are not behind you; they are still to come.

Take a few minutes today to journal about one small win you’re grateful for and one area where you need God’s guidance.
